Welcome to Hammond, Louisiana.
Hammond is located in Tangipahoa Parish within the Greater New Orleans Region, between Baton Rouge and Covington along Highway 190 near Ponchatoula, Albany, and Tickfaw. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 16,617, an increase of 746 since 1990.
Truck farms, beef and dairy cattle, and timber are important. Manufactures include building materials, consumer goods, paper and metal products, and machinery. There is also meat processing. The city is the seat of Southeastern Louisiana Univ. and the home of the Black Heritage Festival. Zemurry Gardens and the Global Wildlife Park also are there.
The city is named for Peter Hammond, a Swedish immigrant, who first settled the area around 1818. Hammond is buried on the east side of town under the Hammond Oak along with his wife, three daughters and a favorite slave.
Tangipahoa Parish and the surrounding areas are probably the best kept secret in southeast Louisiana. Situated northwest of Lake Ponchartrain, it is within easy commuting distance of New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and the industrial corridor along the Mississippi River.
From the village of Manchac on the south end of the town to Kentwood on the north, we are unique in our culture and heritage. Our people are friendly, our air and water is clean, our schools are good, and this is a good place to live.
Ponchatoula is the first high ground after leaving the I-55 elevated expressway from New Orleans. It is a quaint little city with many antique shops and good restaurants. There are many nice subdivisions in the surrounding areas. The school facilities are very good, and the grade point average is above the national average.
Hammond is just to the north, and is as cosmopolitan as Ponchatoula is quaint. It is the home of Southeastern University, several distribution centers, and a commuter airport. Shopping areas are plentiful. The Mall has about sixty stores, and several shopping centers are on the outskirts of town. Restaurants are wonderful, and there are several little theater groups. Presently under construction is a movie complex that will feature ten theaters.

The City Council agreed Tuesday to hold a public hearing and vote on a proposed ordinance raising sewer and water rates by 4 percent in the new fiscal year starting July 1. Mayor Mayson Foster said the city has not increased its sewer and water rates since 2008 even though costs of operating the utility systems have risen considerably since then.
